[klɛ'ro], Alexis Claude, französischer Mathematiker und Astronom, * Paris 7. 5. 1713, ✝ ebenda 17. 5. 1765; Privatgelehrter; trug als Zwölfjähriger eine Würfelverdopplung mittels der nach ihm benannten Kurven an der Académie des sciences vor und wurde bereits 1731 ihr Mitglied; arbeitete u. a. über Raumkurven (1731), geodätischer Linien auf Drehflächen (1733), Differenzialgleichungen (entwickelte hier die Methode des integrierenden Faktors), Algebra und Geometrie. Clairaut nahm 1736/37 an der von P. L. M. de Maupertuis geleiteten geodätischen Gradmessung in Lappland teil, aus deren Ergebnissen er 1743 die Gestalt der Erde sowie ihre Abplattung (Clairaut-Theorem) herleitete und damit die klassische Geodäsie begründete. Später befasste er sich besonders mit Problemen der mathematischen Physik. Aus Bahnstörungen des Halley-Kometen schloss er 1759 auf einen unbekannten störenden Planeten außerhalb der Saturnbahn (den 1781 entdeckten Uranus) und berechnete dessen Bahn.
